The World Aquarium
by Pushpitha Wijesinghe

The World Aquarium which is a part of the St. Louis Children's Aquarium began its operations as a public aquarium in 1971. The main commitment of this fascinating aquarium is to develop conservation awareness among the public on the aquatic world. It is also committed towards providing education and hands-on learning about the Mississippi River, Amazon River and their linking oceans. The World Aquarium is positioned in downtown St. Louis, within the City Museum. There is no better place than this to explore the splendour of life underwater. It is also one of the finest places to learn about the world's aquatic ecosystems and interrelationships between different species. Thousands of incredible marine creatures are on display at the World Aquarium. It is home to more than 10,000 animals and most of them were donated to the aquarium as orphans. Each day visitors get a one of a kind opportunity to view how animals are fed. More important information can be gained by animal keepers who feed these amazing residents of the aquarium. The World Aquarium has carried out several conservation initiatives. Among them are the Army Corps of Engineers initiative, Sustainable Seafood Campaign, Conservation for the Oceans Foundation and much more. The aquarium also carries out several training programmes for the youth. For instance, the Junior Keeper Program is ideal to gather knowledge on diverse groups of animals, how to nurture them and at the same time learn how to be a keeper. Special Scout and Youth Group Programs are also available here. The World Aquarium is generally open for public viewing throughout the year. Visitors will also have the opportunity to enjoy group tours that are combined with the City Museum. Those who wish to explore the magnificence of the aquarium can do so by staying at a nearby St. Louis Hotel. For instance, Millennium Hotel St. Louis that features 780 guestrooms and 29 suites is an ideal choice whether you're travelling to St. Louis for business or pleasure.
